Fusible Plug
A Fusible Plug is a crucial safety device used in boilers to prevent accidents caused by overheating. It is designed to provide protection against low water levels inside the boiler, which can otherwise lead to dangerous conditions such as boiler tube failures or even explosions. The fusible plug is generally fitted on the crown plate of the firebox in steam boilers.
The main function of the fusible plug is to act as a temperature-sensitive safety component. It consists of a hollow brass body filled with a special alloy that melts at a predetermined temperature, usually between 450°C and 550°C. Under normal operating conditions, when the boiler water level is sufficient, the fusible plug remains in contact with water, which keeps it cool and prevents the alloy from melting. However, if the water level falls below the safe limit, the crown plate and plug are exposed to direct heat from the fire. When this happens, the alloy inside the plug melts, creating an opening. This allows steam and water to rush into the furnace, extinguishing the fire and preventing further rise in temperature or pressure.
The use of a fusible plug is mandatory in many boiler systems as per safety regulations. It provides an automatic and reliable method of protecting the boiler without requiring operator intervention. Its simple design, low cost, and effectiveness make it an essential component in steam boiler safety systems.
